Practicing Awareness of Microaggressions

Every day in our society people are treated a certain way because of their race or gender. Actions can send messages of how people feel about people who they interact with.

My sister took her car to this mechanic to repair what she thought was here wheel bearing. So she expressed this to the mechanic. The mechanic did not check to make sure that this was the problem he just replace the wheel bearing so on her way home her car was doing the same thing it was doing before come to find out it was not the wheel bearing but it was her breaks. She had to pay for two repairs. I think the mechanic did things this way because she is a female. I do not believe this would had taken place if a male had taken the car.

My daughters and I went groceries shopping because we were going to have a family cook-out. We had a grocery cart full of things we needed. When my daughter got to the checkout the cashier asked my daughter if she was paying with EBT my daughter stated “No with cash”.

My mother –in-law came to the hospital to see my youngest daughter in the nursery when she was born. To my understanding there were other people there to see other babies. When they brought my daughter to the window someone made the comment “This baby is so cute her daddy must be white, just look at her color and hair. My mother-in-law (a lady who do not hold her tongue) replied.  “This is my son’s baby, my granddaughter and both of her parents are black”.

These examples of microaggression made me and my family members feel humiliated, disrespected, and devalued. Reflecting on these incident has brought about my being more aware of my interactions and communication with people. In my professional role I will continue to work with a more diverse population therefore I must be mindful or the messages I communicate verbally and non-verbally.

  1. Thanks so much for sharing your experiences with microaggressions, Barbara. These are all great examples of this weeks topic. I cannot believe the woman at the grocery store asked if you were paying with EBT. I hope that she felt embarrassed after she said it and would think twice before treating someone like that again. The video segment this week really opened my eyes to how hurtful these statements are even when they come from well-intentioned people. Being aware of microaggressions will hopefully help us to know how to combat them in our own lives.

  2. H Barbara, It is surprising to me the assumptions that people make. Why would anyone assume a person was paying with EBT, and I am surprised that a casher would even ask that question. It seems very unprofessional.

  3. Hello Barbara,
Thank you for taking the time to share these stories with us. I feel terribly that your family has had to endure these types of incidents. Their actions and comments towards you and your family are unacceptable.

  4. Barbara I have experienced some of the same microaggressions . The situation of the car upsets me the most because of the standpoint of they are taking advantage of the person. The scamming angle ro get money because it is really messed up to me, bur when something is wrong really wrong then taking time to explain is better.
I have experienced then situation of people making comments about a innocent children and their race. They are basing physical characteristics that are not fully developed yet Then also because these characteristics are only attributed to certain races because that determines the baby's cute factor is ludacris.

  5. Barbara,
Wow !! I have experience both the situation with the car and with the EBT card. I was told I needed four brand new tires once by a mechanic when I went it to get a flat fixed. Little did he know I had just purchased my current tires one month prior. I couldn't believe he was trying to scam me like that. The EBT issue came when I was making grocery for my childcare center once. The cashier at SAMS stated to me that I couldn't use my EBT card today because their systems were down. I was floored that she just assumed I would be using an EBT card for my purchase. I kindly smiled and told her to continue on scanning my items.
